VOLUNTEERS

Volunteers are a vital part of the organization and provide major support in the care and maintenance of the gardens, greenhouse and grounds. We also have volunteers that assist with educational programs, marketing and fund raising.

Volunteer Hero March 2024

Mary Quirk began volunteering last year at our Annual Spring Plant Sale. She jumped in with both feet and quickly became an invaluable member of Bullington’s volunteer team. She is warm, kind, knowledgeable, and talented. She brings a wealth of skills to the garden to include incredible floral arrangements, expert crafts and artwork, along with her love of gardening.

How did you get involved with Bullington Gardens?

I became a master gardener last spring. I have always loved nature, plants and flowers ever since I was a small child. It’s been such an important part of my life. My grandmother had a beautiful garden and shared her love of nature with me. She was my original inspiration. To fulfill my volunteer hours, I started volunteering at the Bullington Gardens plant sale. And then I got hooked. The more I heard about the mission, the more I knew it was something I wanted to be a part of. I wanted to be around other gardeners to talk about plants and share our love of gardens and nature. The educational part was also a huge component. While I am not an educator, I have always wanted to share my love of nature with children and others. I wasn’t sure what form it would take, but at Bullington I feel like I am part of a team that does just that.

Why do you volunteer?

To be with other like-minded people. To be with other gardeners. It’s what makes my world go round. I enjoy learning and being able to learn from other people. I learn from others and hopefully I’m able to pass on some knowledge, too.

What do you enjoy most about volunteering at Bullington Gardens?

Being with other people and working in the garden along with the fellowship, kinship and camaraderie of shared interests and diverse backgrounds. I also enjoy crafting for the holiday sale. I enjoy theme-oriented crafts and would like to offer more nature themed crafts in the future. I really enjoyed bringing new life to the Bullington windows from the administration building a.k.a. Bob & Sally Bullington’s home. I think it’s important to remember the history of things.

What do you wish other people knew about Bullington Gardens?

I wish they knew more about the mission, the educational programs and the horticultural therapy programs that are offered. I learned a lot during the volunteer orientation; about all that is done to accomplish the mission.

When you are not volunteering, what are some of your hobbies or commitments? What did you do in your previous life?

I worked as a florist for most of my career, retiring from Biltmore in 2020. I now spend my time raising cut flowers, teaching flower arranging and floral craft classes. I decided to start growing cut flowers so that I could raise some of the flowers that are good in a vase, but not widely available as cut flowers. Examples are forget me nots, dianthus and garden phlox. I also like to inspire people to use whatever they have on hand such as different types of greenery, grasses, twigs and mosses, etc. to make their arrangements interesting.

What would you tell someone who is thinking about volunteering at Bullington Gardens?

Come on down! I encourage you to come and experience the variety of volunteer opportunities and be a part of Bullington’s mission. I feel like being surrounded by the beauty of nature is so important to our general well-being and you will find that beauty at Bullington!

Volunteer Hero September 2023

This month we are honored to have Sherri Cappabianca as our September Volunteer Hero. Sherri is a dedicated and passionate volunteer who, along with her beloved dog, Fletcher, is a welcome and friendly face at the gardens. She is the first to volunteer her time and expertise and is not afraid of hard work. Visitors, staff and volunteers alike all welcome her kindness, warmth and caring heart.

How did you get involved with Bullington Gardens?

I went through the Master Gardener program in 2019 after moving here from Orlando in mid-2018. During the class, all of the program leaders came to tell us about their particular programs with the hope that we, as new Master Gardeners, would be interested in volunteering with them. I remember being struck by the Bullington presentation, then when we took a field trip to Bullington as part of the class, I fell in love with the place and the people.

Why do you volunteer?

At this point in my life, as someone who is “semi-retired,” I feel it’s very important and incredibly rewarding to give back to those organizations, causes, and interests that I resonate with, who need any help I can provide, and are appreciative of volunteer efforts. Sometimes, I feel like I probably do more volunteer work than I have time for! In addition to Bullington, along with my co-captain, we produce the Master Gardener newsletter, I recently volunteered to be the Master Gardener Management Action Team’s liaison, I produce my camera club’s newsletter, and my dog and I, as a therapy dog team, volunteer at Asheville airport destressing flying passengers. Bullington is at the top of that list! Some of the others will eventually go to the wayside, but not Bullington.

Why do you choose to donate your time to Bullington?

First, because it’s such a beautiful place. And because I believe entirely in their cause and mission, and I see the passion of all those involved in that mission. I was hooked once I went on the field trip during my Master Gardener training. Plus, it’s even better that I live 10 minutes away! There’s a certain magic about Bullington, that just makes you feel good when you’re there. The staff and volunteers (leadership and other volunteers) are very kind, helpful, and generous of their time. Plus, the staff and leadership team are so very appreciative of all that the volunteers do.

What do you enjoy most about volunteering at Bullington Gardens?

The beauty of the gardens, the fun, and the great people I’ve met through volunteering, not only the staff and volunteers but the many people who visit Bullington. I’ve had the chance to meet people from all over, learn about them and their interests, and share the love and joy of being at a special place such as Bullington. I truly want them to experience the magic of the place.

What do you find most challenging about volunteering at Bullington Gardens?

As someone who has a couple of acres that need regular care, and having a bad knee from the dog mishap, I can’t do volunteer work that requires me to do physical labor. If there’s any labor like this that needs to be done, it needs to be at my own home. But, I’ve found other ways that I believe contribute and make a difference in the overall Bullington mission. That’s my goal.

What is a memorable moment about your work with us?

This may sound funny, but when I first started volunteering as I was going through my Master Gardener program, I was recovering from a serious knee injury (caused by a couple of big dogs running at full speed, mine being one of them). I came to volunteer one day and asked Joellen what I could do to help. She suggested I hand-write out plant labels for the upcoming spring plant sale. After an hour or so and a good hand cramp, I said to Joellen, “there has to be a better way.” She told me they had looked into a number of label options, printing methods, etc., but had not come up with a viable weather-resistant solution other than hand-writing them out. Being a former software engineer, I told her I’d figure something out. Well, I researched until I found a better way – laser-printed weatherproof labels that stick on the plant stakes. With thousands of labels that now need to be produced for the plant sale, it’s become a relatively quick way to get them done without the huge volunteer effort that was previously required. Plus, unlike my handwriting, you can actually read them! I print them based on what they give me for the plants they plan to sell, and volunteers stick them on the plant stakes. Problem solved, and no more hand cramps!

What do you wish other people knew about Bullington Gardens?

That Bullington is special and beautiful. I tell people all the time to come out and see it. I find it amazing how many people in this area don’t know about it. I’m hosting a field trip for my camera club in a week or so because I want members to experience the beauty of the gardens, especially the dahlias, this time of year. Hopefully, those who attend will spread the word further about how wonderful Bullington is.

When you are not volunteering, what are some of your hobbies or commitments? What did you do in your previous life?

I spent 25+ years as a software engineer, working in California, Zurich, Switzerland (contract for a year), and then in Orlando, FL. In 2005, I started working part-time doing canine massage. In 2011, my business partner and I opened Rocky’s Retreat Canine Health & Fitness Center in Orlando, which featured, among other things, an indoor warm water pool for canine hydrotherapy. We sold that business in 2017 and moved to Hendersonville in 2018. I love photography and belong to the local camera club. I love growing my own vegetables, gardening, and writing. I am a published author, and I continue to write and publish non-fiction books about dog health care. I will also once again start teaching a couple of classes on dog care, such as massage for dogs, in the near future.

What would you tell someone who is thinking about volunteering at Bullington Gardens?

Just come do it! It’s a lovely place, and I think you will get hooked like I did. Plus, anything you contribute is completely appreciated.

Volunteer Hero August 2023

This month we celebrate Charlotte Cornell-Simmons. Charlotte is a talented artist with a passion for volunteering. Not only does she volunteer at Bullington Gardens, but dedicates a lot of time to many other community organizations. She greets everyone with a smile, is a welcome addition to our volunteer heroes and a valuable member of our team.

How did you get involved with Bullington Gardens?

I came to Bullington as a Master Gardener intern. We were required to put in several hours at BG.

Why do you volunteer?

My first reaction to that was, "because I'm a volunteer kind of girl". I have always volunteered. I guess that means I enjoy working with others towards a common goal for the benefit of the community.

Why do you choose to donate your time to Bullington?

I love that Bullington is a free public garden, where people can get in touch with nature, take classes that tap into their spiritual side, like gardening, and painting, and that Bullington has a strong focus on growth opportunities for Special Needs kids.

What do you enjoy most about volunteering at Bullington Gardens?

The plants and the volunteers.

What is a memorable moment about your work with us?

There are so many - getting poison ivy while weeding Sallie's Garden, breaking a glass pane on the greenhouse when I let go of a shovel handle, trying to put price tags on pots for a Fall Sale after days of drenching rain...

What do you find most challenging about volunteering at Bullington Gardens?

Not spending more than $300 at any of the plant sales.

What do you wish other people knew about Bullington Gardens?

It is a gem - everyone should come and explore the gardens in different seasons. Volunteering is good, too.

When you are not volunteering, what are some of your hobbies or commitments? What did you do in your previous life?

I am a fiber artist with Heritage Weavers and Fiber Artists at Historic Johnson Farm (another great place!), and I lead chair exercise at a church program for seniors. I enjoy photography, and I retired my ballet slippers at 65. In my previous life, I was a stay-home mom who volunteered in my church, my neighborhood, my school district, Scouts, and politics. Everyone in my community of 10,000 knew who I was.

What would you tell someone who is thinking about volunteering at Bullington Gardens?

Come join us!

Volunteer Hero July 2023

This month we are honored to have Susan Sykes as our July Volunteer Hero. Susan is a welcome and friendly face who is a delight to work with. She embodies the true spirit of volunteerism, with her dedication, friendly vibe and willingness to work hard.

How did you get involved with Bullington Gardens?

My son-in-law, Scott Moore, he calls me Bubbe, kept telling me that I really ought to look into it, how it’s right up my alley and how I would love it. My interest in gardening was passed down to me by my grandfather. He was a horticulturist and propagated and grew Camellias in the low country. He named a Camellia after me, Susan Alice and was part of the Camellia society.

Why do you volunteer?

I volunteer for several reasons, to meet and become acquainted with the people in this area, because I’m not a local from birth. I enjoy the gardening aspects, I love making wreaths, and being part of a group and helping an organization that’s involved with the schools and children.

What do you enjoy most about volunteering at Bullington Gardens?

Getting to know the other volunteers and being part of a horticultural experience.

What do you find most challenging about volunteering at Bullington Gardens?

No big challenges, there are so many different projects I can do, sterilizing and washing pots, fairy ambassador, making wreaths, etc.

What do you wish other people knew about Bullington Gardens?

First of all, I wish they knew it was here. So many people who are fellow gardeners don’t even know it exists, or about the activities throughout the year. It’s a good place to volunteer.

When you are not volunteering, what are some of your hobbies or commitments? What did you do in your previous life?

My hobbies are gardening, cooking-I love to make soup and I’m a potter with my own studio, kiln and a she-shed in my yard. In my previous life I owned a small mom and pop printing company that offered advertising, signage and logo design.

What would you tell someone who is thinking about volunteering at Bullington Gardens?

That it's an awful lot of fun and very worthwhile, there are so many things to do, not just one thing. It keeps your attention.

Volunteer Hero June 2023

How did you get involved with Bullington Gardens?

I first got started coming to Bullinton Gardens when I worked as a teaching assistant in the EC classroom at North Henderson High School. Our students came once a week to the horticultural therapy classes.

Why do you volunteer?

I volunteer because I enjoy outdoor activities and nature. Also, the people you work with at Bullington are great!

Why do you choose to donate your time to Bullington?

Having come to Bullington with the EC students, I saw what a great place it was to volunteer my time. I felt I had some skills that would be helpful to the Gardens.

What do you enjoy most about volunteering at Bullington Gardens?

I enjoy coming to Bullington because it is a beautiful place. It is also a place where I can put my woodland creativeness to work. Especially, on the Fairy Trail and in the Fairy Village.

What is a memorable moment about your work with us?

My most memorable experience has been working with my wife and helping to create the Fairy Trail and Village.

What do you find most challenging about volunteering at Bullington Gardens?

The most challenging thing about volunteering is finding the time to do more volunteering.

What do you wish other people knew about Bullington Gardens?

I wish other people knew what a hidden gem Bullington Gardens are and that they could also come out and volunteer.

When you are not volunteering, what are some of your hobbies or commitments? What did you do in your previous life?

When I am not volunteering at Bullington, I volunteer at the Green River Library and am active with the Green River Community Association. I enjoy playing basketball with the seniors at the Rec. Dept and traveling with my wife. I follow sports especially Carolina Basketball. I enjoy building things in my workshop.

In my previous life, I was pretty much a jack of all trades! I owned my own business, worked in plumbing supply, drove a gas cylinder delivery truck, coached high school soccer and worked as a Teaching Assistant. Variety is the spice of life!

What would you tell someone who is thinking about volunteering at Bullington Gardens?

I wish other people knew Bullington Gardens is a great place with super people. If you have a skill or expertise the gardens can use you!You could come out and make these beautiful gardens even better.

Volunteer Hero May 2023

This month we are grateful to have Janice Youngblood as our May 2023 Volunteer Hero. Janice brings a welcoming heart, willing spirit and a can do attitude to volunteering at Bullington. She has become a welcome face at events and is always a pleasure to have around.

How did you get involved with Bullington Gardens?

I became involved with Bullington Gardens as a member of Master Gardeners of Henderson County.

Why do you volunteer?

I volunteer because I want to use my time in ways that accomplish something. I like to be able to see what I have accomplished and know that someone will benefit from my time and efforts. I volunteer to interact with others who enjoy some of the same activities.

Why do you choose to donate your time to Bullington?

I have found that Bullington has numerous projects that appeal to many, many volunteers. I have been fortunate to select activities that provide me a lot of peace and pleasure. Bullington also provides a calm atmosphere that gives volunteers and visitors a lot a nature and fresh air.

What do you enjoy most about volunteering at Bullington Gardens?

I enjoy preparing for the spring plant sale most. My favorite activity is potting the new plants. I can lose myself in the filling the pots with soil and establishing the plants.

What is a memorable moment about your work with us?

I went into the greenhouse a few days after potting new plants. Every row was filled. Pots were on the ground All of the plants had grown significantly. Some had even started to bloom. The sight was overwhelming. I absolutely loved it and it made me feel wonderful.

What do you find most challenging about volunteering at Bullington Gardens?

It is challenging to me that I am not more involved at Bullington. I would love to be able to make a bigger difference. I need to continue checking out projects.

What do you wish other people knew about Bullington Gardens?

I wish that more people knew that Bullington is a labor of love and commitment from a lot of people who volunteer their work and time. It is not a public garden funded by the state or other government agency. It is a private garden that the public is invited and welcomed to enjoy. That is why Bullington is only open 9 to 4 Monday through Saturday and closed on Sunday. That is why we need and are so grateful for donations. The public should know that Bullington Gardens is there because a group of people love it and love working there. Those people cherish it enough to donate their time and labor. They want you to also believe Bullington is somewhere special.

When you are not volunteering, what are some of your hobbies or commitments? What did you do in your previous life?

I worked for the Asheville Veterans Administration Medical Center for 23 years in several positions. I volunteer at the Western North Carolina Nature Center and Friends of the Fairview Library. I love to read and spend time with friends.

What would you tell someone who is thinking about volunteering at Bullington Gardens?

If you are thinking of volunteering at Bullington, you should really give it a try. You will make lots of friends. You will find work that fills your needs and brings enjoyment. It is a place of calm in a hectic world.

Volunteer Hero March 2023

This month we celebrate Stan Rogan. Stan is talented, dedicated and driven to succeed. Stan first started volunteering at Bullington after learning about us through Steve Pettis from the NC Cooperative Extension office. He is a welcome face at the gardens whose many talents have contributed greatly to our Garden with Heart!

How did you get involved with Bullington Gardens?

I love gardening and have always wanted to become a master gardener. My goal is to create a landscape plan emphasizing flowering perennials for my home. I thought that completing the master gardener program and getting practical experience at a botanical garden would be a good way to get started. After talking to Steve Pettis at the NC Cooperative Extension office about volunteering opportunities, I chose Bullington Gardens and started assisting in their pollinator garden.

Why do you volunteer?

I enjoy spending time with interesting people whose passions match mine.

Why do you choose to donate your time to Bullington?

I have been made welcome since the first day. They are like a family welcoming you home as you arrive. One of their strengths is helping you find a task/project that may interest you.

What do you enjoy most about volunteering at Bullington Gardens?

Getting to know the staff and volunteers and working with them. They are like walking plant encyclopedias and I want to be one, too. Actually, I’ll settle for getting to know a hundred or so favorites.

What is a memorable moment about your work with us?

Mark and I spent two mornings last summer removing a Rugosa Rose thicket in the perennial garden. It had overtaken the plot choking out everything with a twisted mass of long roots that were extremely difficult to remove. In my master gardener class, I spotted the Rugosa Rose on their list of “Shrubs Most Attractive to Bees.” I spoke up and suggested that they remove that one. I was excited that, as a result of that challenge, I was able to use practical experience to help improve their garden recommendations.

What do you wish other people knew about Bullington Gardens?

It has an excellent horticulture therapy program and offers educational seminars on all things botanical. The dahlia garden and fairy trail are unmatched gems. It should be on your short list of must see garden destinations.

When you are not volunteering, what are some of your hobbies or commitments? What did you do in your previous life?

I enjoy fly fishing, tent camping with my 3 great nephews and their families, watching all University of South Carolina sports and reading. I am the genealogy nerd in my family and was a boy scout leader for about 10 years. Staying active in my church has always been an important part of my life.

I majored in Accounting and spent my career in manufacturing in Cost Accounting Manager, Financial Accounting Manager and Controller roles in North and South Carolina. My wife, Nancy, and I retired here in 2021 after living here previously for 6 years.

What would you tell someone who is thinking about volunteering at Bullington Gardens?

I hope you can spend a few hours to find out why so many people love helping make Bullington Gardens such a beautiful place.

Volunteer Hero February 2023

This month we are grateful to have Doreen Blue as our February 2023 Volunteer Hero. Doreen brings creative flair to the garden. She works alongside Mary Martin on all things Fairy and dresses up in gorgeous butterfly wings that delight all our Fairy visitors. Her bright spirit has brought a unique charm to Bullington.

How did you get involved with Bullington Gardens?

I was a special education assistant and we took our classes to Bullington once a week. They loved the planting, nature crafts, frog pond, walks, and the great people there. A true joy to have the Bullington folks share their passion with this special population.

Why do you volunteer?

I loved all the people I met there, John Murphy, all the dedicated horticultural education folks were terrific with the kids.

Why do you choose to donate your time to Bullington?

Mary and Dave Martin were working so hard on the fairy trail, I wanted to help.

What do you enjoy most about volunteering at Bullington Gardens?

Bullington Gardens is a hidden gem. It is full of beautiful plants, knowledge volunteers and a visit to the fairy trail is an extra added bonus. I like visiting the camp and doing a group with them. Music unites us all.

What is a memorable moment about your work with us?

Every Saturday working as a fairy ambassador was magical. I saw a baby fawn one day on the trail. Tons of delighted people, young and old. People are so grateful for this place once they hear about it. I love when kids come back and bring friends or family and they love wearing their outfits.

What do you find most challenging about volunteering at Bullington Gardens?

Sometimes it is hot but somehow better at Bullington. We get crowds but they are manageable. Everyone is understanding and so grateful we were one of the few places people felt safe during covid.

What do you wish other people knew about Bullington Gardens?

More about all the programs they provide and that we are here and a non-profit.

When you are not volunteering, what are some of your hobbies or commitments? What did you do in your previous life?

I was a OT/PT Sensory motor instructor with special needs preschool children in Rhode Island. I love theater and costume making. I love wearing my fairy costume and seeing how others enjoy it’. I volunteer at Sandburgs with the goats, Mountaintrue in the Creeks and doing water sampling.  I wrote a few plays and enjoy seeing them performed. I love helping Mary Martin with the unicorn horns, and fairy things. I teach water aerobics at the YMCA and Agelessgrace classes around the area. I love the beach, peeps and making puzzles.

What would you tell someone who is thinking about volunteering at Bullington Gardens?

Volunteering with this group is rewarding and a pleasure. You get to meet people from all over and share your love of nature. Joellen is so appreciative of all we do and the snacks she provides are yummy. You are guided by the best people. Deb, Mary and Tracy are all great and willingly share their knowledge and passion. I am even getting to know a few more plants! Bullington is a peaceful oasis in the woods. What is not to love. Volunteering here is a gift the garden gives me in exchange for a few hours of my time. It truly is a garden with a BIG BIG heart!

Volunteer Hero January 2023

This month we celebrate Joani Robson. Joani is talented, dedicated and a joy to be around. She first started volunteering at Bullington in 2012 after moving here from Florida. She brought her wealth of education in Horticulture and didn’t waste a single moment putting it to good use for Hendersonville’s only public botanical garden.

How did you get involved with Bullington Gardens?

My husband and I used to visit Western North Carolina to hike and backpack; we fell in love with Hendersonville and moved here in 2012. I came to a fall plant sale and asked if they were looking for volunteers. I found John Murphy and mentioned I have a background in Horticulture-John asked when can you start? I’ve been here ever since. In 2013, I began working with Ruth on the seed production, planting the perennial and annual seeds for the annual plant sales and working with the potting crews twice a week.

Why do you volunteer?

Looking back at where I’ve been and what I’ve done, I’ve been very blessed. Growing up, I had always heard you should give back to the community-so I’ve volunteered wherever I’ve lived. In Tallahassee, I had a colleague with a young son. I invited them to volunteer. It started him on a path to volunteering. It’s gratifying and fulfilling.

Why do you choose to donate your time to Bullington?

When I moved here, I was hoping to find an organization where I could use my horticultural skills. Living in Hendersonville, I thought how wonderful for the community to have its own botanical garden.

What do you enjoy most about volunteering at Bullington Gardens?

It’s really the people. If they don’t start off with a smile on their face, they leave with one. Everyone is interested in nature and I’ve developed strong eternal bonds with the people here. It’s special that I met them here.

What is a memorable moment about your work with us?

I think working at the plant sales. I’ve had the opportunity to grow plants in New England and Florida so people would ask me what to grow and what to buy. I helped them make decisions and grew to be a pretty good salesperson. It’s a fun experience, like being an educator.

What do you find most challenging about volunteering at Bullington Gardens?

Making Christmas wreaths, swags and bows. It’s very enjoyable, creative and I love doing it, but trying not to overdo it is difficult!

What do you wish other people knew about Bullington Gardens?

I wish more people knew Bullington existed. When I first started working here, I kept telling people there’s a plant sale, and people would say I didn’t even know there was a botanical garden. Still find there are people out there who don’t know we exist.

When you are not volunteering, what are some of your hobbies or commitments? What did you do in your previous life?

Hiking is my primary interest and I’ll continue as long as I’m able. I love photography and I’m a member of the Hendersonville Camera Club. I also love gardening on my own. Most of my time right now is committed to working in my community’s garden, a victory garden of sorts. We grow food for local food pantries. I got involved in the community garden when I mentioned a horticultural background to the other volunteers. What started as a summer season garden is now a three season garden. We dedicate half an acre to growing and last year grew 6,400 pounds of food. We have been growing more than 6,000 pounds of food a year. We donate 100% of the food we produce. We also educate folks about pollinator gardens, encourage them to make donations so we can continue to grow food for local food pantries, and have our own plant sale.

It really started when I was three years old. I was fortunate to have a Grandfather who took me out in nature and instilled a desire and love of nature. At age 14, I figured out that was what I wanted to do. I attended the University of Florida in Gainesville and received a B.S. in Horticulture. I wanted to be a production manager for a wholesale nursery and pretty much covered all aspects of what I was interested in. Working in the Horticulture field was physically taxing and after many years, I decided to embark on a new career. A real estate broker came to our home and said I would make a good real estate agent. I felt it was a good fit and went to work for my clients. I advertised myself as their home and garden agent. When buyers would struggle with barren landscapes, I assisted them with their garden design.

What would you tell someone who is thinking about volunteering at Bullington Gardens?

If you love nature and want to learn new things, realize that you don’t have to know anything about gardening, you can come here and be educated as much as you want and be in a very comfortable environment while you do so. A lot of folks would love to do something like this and you absolutely can with no background or training, just a desire to be here, learn new things and get your hands dirty. It’s not just gardening, it’s crafting, building, outdoor related activities and so much more. You just might learn a new talent.

Volunteer Hero December 2022

This month we are grateful to have Kyle Gilgis as our December 2022 Volunteer Hero. Kyle, along with Vickie Robertson, have been the powerhouse behind our new garden shop. Her vision and drive has brought new visitors to the garden, along with new friends. Capitalizing on our unique blend of visitors, Kyle has brought new life to our ‘Garden with Heart.’

How did you get involved with Bullington Gardens?

When we moved here several Master Gardener friends told me I MUST see Bullington Gardens. After meeting Joellen I was hooked.

Why do you volunteer?

Volunteering adds value to life. Giving back gives my life meaning and joy.

Why do you choose to donate your time to Bullington?

We live in an HOA that takes care of most of the landscape around our community so this gives me a chance to get some dirt under my fingernails and watch things grow.

What is a memorable moment about your work with us?

Last year I served in the plant room during the Holiday Sale. I met Vickie Robertson and together we came up with a business plan for a garden/gift shop. We saw it into existence in June and it was a great success for the two of us and Bullington.

What do you find most challenging about volunteering at Bullington Gardens?

Knowing more of the volunteers. It would be nice if we could have more social events to get to know each other. Monthly pot lucks might be a good idea.

What do you wish other people knew about Bullington Gardens?

I wish they knew we existed! Marching in the 4th of July parade we realized folks didn’t know about us. We need a plan to get the word out!

When you are not volunteering, what are some of your hobbies or commitments? What did you do in your previous life?

Our community has a newsletter and I write a monthly gardening article. I also volunteer at our church and for Downtown Hendo events. It’s a full and wonderful life.

In my past life I was an elected official for over 20 years ending in DuPage County, Illinois as a Commissioner.

Volunteer Hero November 2022

This month we celebrate Vickie Robertson. Vickie is a powerhouse, full of energy, ideas, and organizational skills like we’ve never seen. One of the forces behind our garden store, Vickie has jumped into volunteering at Bullington with both feet! And we sure are grateful for her intelligence, business savvy, and go get ‘em attitude.

How did you get involved with Bullington Gardens?

Bullington was one of the choices for new Master Grdeners to volunteer. I contacted Joellen and was invited to come and help out in the Fairy Garden.

Why do you volunteer?

I like people and I like to help. I’m a problem solver and love being involved.

Why do you choose to donate your time to Bullington?

Bullington is so pretty and the people are wonderful. Gardening and learning about different plants is fun.

What do you enjoy most about volunteering at Bullington Gardens?

Once I started helping out at Bullington I met so many beautiful people and enjoy interacting with them and with the public, especially the kids who come to see the Fairy Garden.

What is a memorable moment about your work with us?

A few years ago I was invited to learn about the Christmas sale and the challenges presented. Then Covid hit and I was asked to be in charge of the online market and putting everything together for the orders. It was a fun gig but challenging because I had to make sure the inventory was available. If Jen hadn’t been here to help, I would have had a difficult time.

What do you find most challenging about volunteering at Bullington Gardens?

Knowing who to go to for the answers and learning everyone’s names!!

What do you wish other people knew about Bullington Gardens?

I think it’s important for everyone to understand the mission of Bullington and to know that we are a non-profit and are trying to grow.

When you are not volunteering, what are some of your hobbies or commitments? What did you do in your previous life?

I’m a military wife who has had challenges all over the world. I was known as the “Polaroid Hostess” in Germany because my hubby’s job meant that we entertained often and sometimes he would call me in the morning and tell me we needed to have a cocktail party for 30 people that evening. Once his assignment changed, I went to work for a chain of video stores as their Director of Operations.

After we retired I studied Interior Design and part of the classes I had to take were art. I have a background in bookkeeping and business so art was a different entity altogether. But I fell in love with it and now I paint watercolors and take online classes in drawing and watercolor.

I’m a Grandmother to 12 kids, most of whom are grown now and Great-Grandmother to two sweet little ones. I’ve always done crafts and enjoy gardening as well.
