Bullington Gardens is blessed to have many wonderful volunteers who give their time, love and hard work in an effort to keep the gardens beautiful for our many visitors and students. This month we are highlighting Deb Daniel as our Volunteer Hero. Deb first got involved with Bullington through the Henderson County Master Gardener program in 2014.
Why do you volunteer and why do you choose to donate your time to Bullington?
I retired sooner than planned and wanted to continue to interact with people. I worked outside and taught landowners about best environmental practices. Bullington provides plenty of opportunities to be active working outdoors and being involved with the children and adult visitors. I enjoy being outside and educating the public. The one thing I missed in retirement was educating students and the general public and taking continuing education classes. Bullington provides plenty of educational opportunities.
What do you enjoy most about volunteering at Bullington?
The friendship and camaraderie of the volunteers and staff. I also enjoy seeing the joy on the faces of the visitors who come to the gardens, especially the children (and adults) visiting the Fairy Garden and the Dahlia Garden. The annual BOOST Olympics are always fun to watch. I have more friends now than at any other point in my life.
What is a memorable moment about your work with us?
Hearing the volunteers singing Christmas carols while crafting. Receiving the Jedi Master watering can award.
What do you find most challenging about volunteering at Bullington Gardens?
Limiting my volunteer hours.
What do you wish other people knew about Bullington?
Whether it is learning about a specific type of plant, how to prune, taking an art class or helping with the schoolchildren who come to the gardens there is always something to learn. The volunteers here form an extended family and it is a great way to form friendships whether you are new to the area or a long time resident.
What are some of your hobbies or commitments?
Crafting, quilting, gardening, reading, working puzzles of all sorts and playing Mahjong. I am a member of the Bullington Leadership Team, active Master Gardener (MG), member of the MG Management Action Team and the WNC MG Gardening Symposium, Board member and officer of my HOA and care giver.
What would you tell someone who is thinking about volunteering at Bullington Gardens?
Please come and have fun with us in the Garden! Where else can you come and dig in the dirt, make new friends and help support the educational programs for special needs children and adults? Whatever your interests and talents, there is always something for you to do.
