Bullington Gardens is blessed to have many wonderful volunteers who give their time, love and hard work in an effort to keep the gardens beautiful for our many visitors and students. This month we are highlighting Ron Rich as our Volunteer Hero.
How did you first get involved in with Bullington Gardens?
We have been coming to the area for years on vacation, owned a home in Hendersonville and visited Bullington several times. When we moved to Flat Rock permanently and I retired, I was looking for something to do.
Why do you volunteer?
I enjoy being outdoors and gardening and wanted to keep returning and give back to the community.
Why do you choose to donate your time to Bullington?
After we moved to Flat Rock and I retired, I thought it would be the best fit for me since I always enjoyed being outside and working in the garden.
What do you enjoy most about volunteering at Bullington Gardens?
All the great people and other volunteers and how everyone appreciates our work. I like seeing all the varieties of plants and flowers and learning about them.
What is a memorable moment about your work with us?
I do the mowing and other work. Last summer, several volunteers told me the yard and field around the Dahlia and Lily garden had never looked so good and other visitors have noticed.
What do you find most challenging about volunteering at Bullington Gardens?
Being able to identify all the plants. I want to be able to tell visitors when they ask about them. I will be taking the Master Gardeners program through the extension to grow my knowledge.
What do you wish other people knew about Bullington Gardens?
That it is a non-profit and thanks to many volunteers, school kids get to come and experience what gardening is all about, and how fun it is to plant a seed and watch it grow.
When you are not volunteering, what are some of your hobbies or commitments?
I enjoy hiking, being outdoors and taking care of my own flower garden. I also like reading, playing sudoku, crossword puzzles and card games. I also volunteer with our neighborhood garden club.
What would you tell someone who is thinking about volunteering at Bullington Gardens?
Come out and enjoy the fun! Even at our age, we can still play in the dirt!
