Bullington Gardens is blessed to have many wonderful volunteers who give their time, love and hard work in an effort to keep the gardens beautiful for our many visitors and students. This month we are highlighting Ellen Bernstein as our Volunteer Hero.
How did you first get involved with Bullington Gardens?
Through the Masters Gardener program at the Hendersonville County Cooperative Extension.
Why do you volunteer?
I think giving back is important. I’m fairly lucky I can afford to do that. I enjoy volunteering, meeting people, being productive and volunteering is self-satisfying.
Why do you choose to donate your time to Bullington?
I like the people and what they stand for, what they do with the kids and the programs.
What do you enjoy most about volunteering at Bullington Gardens?
I enjoy the crafting, gives a good purpose for it. I like learning more about the plants.
What is a memorable moment about your work with us?
The fairy garden working with the kids, watching them on Fairy Days.
What do you find most challenging about volunteering at Bullington Gardens?
Trying to remember all the names of the plants I should know.
What do you wish other people knew about Bullington Gardens?
I used to think more people should know it exists but it seems like it’s getting there now. All this stuff happening with the fairy trail. I wish people knew that it’s basically run by volunteers.
(Side note-Bullington Gardens has four employees and only one full-time employee. The gardens would not be the same without our volunteers! They are amazingly skilled and giving of their time.)
When you are not volunteering, what are some of your hobbies or commitments? What did you do in your previous life?
I owned a promotional products agency for 25 years until we retired and our son took over the business. I volunteer at The Humane Society thrift store, volunteer at The Flat Rock playhouse gardens, take ballet classes, play pickleball, horseback ride, swim, craft and I am an avid reader.
What would you tell someone who is thinking about volunteering at Bullington Gardens?
Do it. Like Nike says Just do it. Get to know the people, make friends, feel like you’re doing something useful.
