Volunteer Hero December 2020

12/21/2020 by Bullington Gardens

Bullington Gardens is blessed to have many wonderful volunteers who give their time, love and hard work in an effort to keep the gardens beautiful for our many visitors and students. This month we are highlighting Jerry Neff as our Volunteer Hero.

How did you get involved with Bullington Gardens?
We moved to Hendersonville in August, 2014. and I came to the fall plant sale that year and the spring sale in April 2015. I read about volunteering at Bullington and then decided to give it a try in August 2015. I enjoyed it and have continued to volunteer each year since then.
Why do you volunteer?
Now that I am fully retired, I want to remain active in a useful activity doing what I enjoy. I have been a gardener most of my life – with time out for college- and felt I could contribute most in a gardening setting.
Why do you choose to donate your time at Bullington?
It was the first gardening volunteering activity I tried and enjoyed the people and the location more than at other volunteering opportunities in Hendersonville.
What do you enjoy most about volunteering at Bullington Gardens?
Although I am quiet, I enjoy the social aspects of volunteering most and the opportunity to choose my work tasks. I tend to choose jobs that are challenging and that few other volunteers choose – like helping in the woodland garden, transplanting potbound plants in the greenhouse, weeding the azalea bed and assisting in preparing dahlia tubers for planting in the greenhouse.
What is a memorable moment about your work with us?
I have particularly enjoy working in the dahlia garden, deadheading and pruning, in the late summer when the dahlias are in full bloom.
What do you find most challenging about volunteering at Bullington Gardens?
Not much, except remembering people’s names and the names of plants in the gardens.
What do you wish other people knew about Bullington Gardens?
I wish more people in the hendersonville/Asheville area knew that Bullington Gardens is a great teaching and horticultural facility.
When you are not volunteering, what are some of your hobbies or commitments? What did you do in your previous life?
My main hobby I gardening, particularly rhododendrons/azaleas, dwarf conifers, and dahlias. I also try to grow some vegetables (a constant battle with voles, rabbits, squirrels, insects/disease and dear. I have a PhD in zoology and biochemistry from Duke U. And have worked in marine biology for the last 50 years first at Texas A&M U. Then at  Battelle marine laboratory in Duxbury, MA, plus private consulting on effects of oil spills on marine ecosystems.
What would you tell someone who it thinking about volunteering at Bullington Gardens?
If you are interested in growing and caring for plants and/or garnering-based teaching of special needs children, Bullington is the best place to volunteer. Staff and volunteers are all delightful people with diverse gardening/teaching interests.

Jerry was a member of a Horticultural Society in Massachusetts before relocating to North Carolina in an effort to downsize and be closer to his son. While visiting Bullington’s plant sale, he met Volunteer Coordinator, Joellen Johnson, who quickly recognized his talents and wasted no time putting him to work. He is a Master Gardener who has volunteered at the Flat Rock Playhouse and Bullington Gardens. He enjoys working with the plants and weeding! (Truly a treasure.) He especially enjoys working in the Dahlia Garden with Brian and his crew whom he calls, “really nice people, a special group.” This year was a challenge with the Covid-9 restrictions, but they rearranged their schedules to allow for social distancing and managed to put on a spectacular display of Dahlias. We are grateful Jerry has chosen to give his talents and time to Bullington Gardens.

What’s New at Bullington Gardens?

A Message from Annie Higgins, Bullington Gardens Administrative Director

Dear Supporters of Bullington Gardens,   Starting a new position is always intimidating, but the initiation into my career at Bullington couldn’t have gone better. I’d always known that Bullington was a ‘Garden with Heart’, but I experienced it first hand as I met so many who had decades of history with the garden. I was welcomed not only by John and his staff, but by donors, volunteers, and board members. I’d like to thank you for that warm welcome and gentle hospitality. While not … [Read More...]
