Volunteers are a vital part of the organization and provide major support in the care and maintenance of the gardens, greenhouse, and grounds. We also have volunteers that assist with educational programs, marketing, and fund raising.

John’s Take-Summer Newsletter 2018

As the school year progresses each year, it’s always obvious there are some students who really respond to our programs. Some students thrive on the opportunity to learn outside the four walls of a classroom, and relish the chance to use their hands. For others it might be expressing their creativity in the garden.

There were a number of enthusiastic students who really excelled at Bullington in last year’s group who fit one of these categories. But there was one group in particular that really stood out. For the West High BOOST group, Thursday mornings at Bullington couldn’t come around fast enough. Each time they came, they had new ideas or a new design for some element in their garden for the annual competition. And they were eager get working to create it.

One student, Autumn, emerged as the leader and skillfully directed the others. She commented in a recent Mountain Xpress article how her confidence really grew through the process. She became more comfortable speaking her opinions and leading the others. Autumn enjoyed the creative process of coming up with an idea and implementing it over time. And ultimately she and the rest of her team were very proud of the results. Their Pioneer History garden had some very thoughtful and clever elements and overall was very attractive.

Self-confidence is the underlying goal in our programs that makes all the other goals achievable. For Autumn her growing confidence was rewarded by her winning one of our Most Valuable Worker awards and her school winning the garden competition. This is the kind of success story that we love to hear and one that we hope will repeat with each new group of students that comes to Bullington.

June 2018 Update

June was an exciting month at Bullington Gardens. We had the BOOST and HT awards, Fairy Days and the Herbal High Tea.

The awards ceremony was a fantastic day for the students, families, volunteers and teachers. The students were able to present their work in the gardens, explore the grounds, play games and receive their awards. The best garden award went to West High School for their Pioneer History Garden featuring an old wagon that they made. But of course, Hendersonville, North and East worked just as hard on their spectacular gardens. It was a tough choice for our judges! If you missed the award ceremony, our website has some pictures of the students and their gardens as well as the awards ceremony. It was a special day for the students and volunteers. Liz Carey from the Mountain Express was here to take pictures and interview John and a few of the students about our BOOST and HT program. Tools of the Trade: Watercolor Techniques for Beginners taught by Jane Voorhees continues to be a very popular class, selling out every single time. We may have another one coming up soon so keep your eyes peeled if you missed the last one! We also had quite a large attendance for our annual Summer Garden Tour. John Murphy and our talented and knowledgeable volunteers led the tours which concluded at the greenhouse and hoop houses allowing for the visitors to peruse the plants in bloom.

One of the most popular events at Bullington Gardens is Fairy Days and this year was no different. Each day presented opportunities for the children to explore, learn, grow and use their imaginations in the Fairy Garden. They made crafts, enjoyed a Fairy tea and explored the garden with its numerous features. So many people worked on bringing the Fairy Garden to life and we couldn’t be more grateful for all their hard work. We also owe a huge debt of gratitude to the Fairies and Gnomes who volunteered their time. Your gift of time and love brought smiles to the faces of so many children and we thank you from the bottom of our hearts.

The Herbal High Tea was a huge success thanks to spectacular volunteers and Beau Martin with his pickling recipe! Participants learned a new sweet pickle recipe and enjoyed a gourmet spread. It even made the Times News!

All of the Dahlias have been planted thanks to Brian Killingsworth and his merry band of volunteers! Wine & Dahlias should be a veritable treat for the eyes this year. If you haven’t had a chance to visit Bullington lately, come on by to check out the Daylily garden in full bloom.

The Herbal High Tea was a huge success thanks to spectacular volunteers and Beau Martin with his pickling recipe! Participants learned a new sweet pickle recipe and enjoyed a gourmet spread. It even made the Times News!
